San Francisco: UN Torture Czar Juan Mendez tonight, shuttle to the Presidio Saturday, Black Panther Reunion all weekend *** Feel free to spread far and wide *** UN Torture Czar Juan Mendez tonight, shuttle to the Presidio Saturday, Black Panther Reunion all weekend Juan Mendez: The largest hunger strike in history, involving 30,000 prisoners at its peak, is suspended after 60 days – 40 prisoners having starved themselves every one of those long, lonely days despite incessant harassment, which has since escalated to cruel, brutal retaliation against the strikers. The Bay View’s first-person accounts are listed below, and more are on the way. What can we do to help? We can show with our bodies and our words that we care. Major media prioritize coverage of issues by the numbers of supporters who turn out. Tonight, for starters, U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan Mendez is speaking at UC Berkeley. Let’s pack the house: Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) Room 2060 on the UC Berkeley campus. If you’d normally take BART, it’s time to pick up the phone and create a carpool alternative. Presidio Shuttle: The Presidio, the old, 1,500-acre army base now part of San Francisco that pre-dates the city to 1776, when it was founded by the Spanish, was home to the Buffalo Soldiers, and 400 are buried there. But the current generation of Black San Franciscans rarely visits the base, now a national park, with its 300 acres of forest, miles of beaches, 24 hiking trails and 14 biking routes. So an enlightened administration at the Presidio Trust is running free shuttles from San Francisco’s Black heartland, Bayview Hunters Point, to the Presidio all day every Saturday in October. Please spread the word so everyone knows to get on the bus tomorrow, Oct. 19, and next Saturday, Oct. 26, and bring the family for a wonderful day exploring the wilderness inside the City. Shuttles run every half hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., leaving from Alice Griffith Opportunity Center, Willie Mays Boys and Girls Club and the Bayview YMCA. All the info is at parksconservancy.org/assets/visit-your-parks/bayview-hunters-point.pdf. Tomorrow’s special events at the Presidio include the International Sand Castle Building Competition 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a Buffalo Soldiers presentation 2-3:30 p.m. Black Panther Party 47th Anniversary Celebration: Black Panther Party co-founder Elbert “Big Man” Howard is the host for this year’s reunion, so you know it’s going to be good! All the events are being held at the Arlene Francis Center, 99 Sixth St., Santa Rosa. The full schedule is posted to the Bay View Calendar of Events. Today at 3 p.m., a Political Prisoner Workshop will be led by Claude Marks and Manuel LaFontaine, followed by two films, “Fallen Comrades” and “In the Land of the Free” on the Angola 3. Tomorrow’s packed agenda features a workshop at noon on Women in the Black Panther Party with Sister Sheba Haven, the classic film “Eyes of a Rainbow” on Assata Shakur, spoken word by Meres-Sia Gabri El, “Urban Warrior in the African Bush,” a film on Charlotte “Mama C” O’Neal, and a keynote address at 4:30 p.m. by Minister of Culture Emory Douglas. Here’s your chance to meet and mingle with some of the folks labeled by J. Edgar Hoover “the greatest threat to internal security of the country.” More events: Check the Bay View Calendar of Events often. On Monday at 10 a.m., the legislature is holding a hearing on prison overcrowding. And on Tuesday, Oct. 22, also in Sacramento, people fed up with police brutality and murder are demonstrating together on the Capitol steps from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the National Day against Police Brutality.
