San Jose / St. Joseph 17th Century FILIPINO Wood with glass eyes. A stunningly carved image of St. Joseph in unpainted wood. The face and hands are sensitively carved and the vestments exquisitely rendered. St. Joseph is here shown as an old man. His left hand held close to his breast with his right hand extended to hold a staff now lost. He wears a tunic that is belted at the waist and tied with a knot typical of those found on images from an earlier periods. Over the tunic, St. Joseph wears a cape that is thrown at the back; folds laterally at the front; and the edges tucked at the waist at the belt. The eyes may have been a later replacement for the original carved-in eyes. He stands on a round base mounted on a round shaped integral base. The back is carved out so as to lighten the image. May have been a church piece and at one time been mounted on his own altar. Height: 130 cm or 51 in.
