San Jose folks receive P6.7M worth of Core Shelter Assistance Project from DSWD By: Ana-Liza S. Macatangay Wednesday 1st of October 2014 New 0 0 0 0 NAGA CITY, Oct.1 (PIA) --- San Jose Mayor Antonio Chavez , together with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWF) assistant regional director Corazon Miña, personally handed over a check worth P6.7M to help the beneficiaries who lost their homes from the recent calamity brought by typhoon Glenda. This project was carried out under the Core Shelter Assistance Project of DSWD that caters to indigent families through the provision of cash assistance and other construction materials that they can use to refurbish their damaged dwelling place. Recipients will receive P70,000.00 each. Chavez thanked DSWD for realizing one of his visions of providing each family with a decent place to live in, particularly those who are living in the shorelines in the outer skirts of the town and are perennially affected by strong typhoons, flooding and related natural disasters. “These are indigent families who hardly have money to buy their daily foods, much more built their houses. The assistance from DSWD plus the counterpart of the municipality will be enough for them to have a new start and eventually take off from there.” The municipal government on the other hand will also give P750,000.00 as counterpart to the project and will be used to purchase construction materials to augment families who might lack resources to fully restore or build their houses. While some beneficiaries will stay in their original residences, others will have to be directed to a resettlement area in Catalutuan resettlement site, including 38 families from Barangay Sabang whose houses were washed away from storm surges. Aside from Barangay Sabang, other areas that will benefit from the project include Barangays Catalutuan with 39 families including those from Sabang; Bagacay with 13 families/ recipients; Telegrapo, 6; , Salogon, 12; , Pugay, 16 and Tominawog, with 10 benefited families. Out of the 97 recipients, 26 are Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps beneficiaries. The 4Ps program endeavors to provide financial assistance to the poor segment of the society and eventually alleviate their economic condition. The program also aims to “break the intergenerational poverty cycle though investments in human capital.” The Core shelter project is another endeavor of the government to compliment the 4Ps Program and eventually deliver an all-inclusive approach to combat poverty in the country. The houses are designed to withstand 180 to 220kph wind velocity to ensure safety of the dwellers. This is a collaborative effort where the stakeholders and beneficiaries will have to work hand in hand to realize the project. The beneficiaries will have to provide labor for the construction of the shelter units. Chavez is hopeful that there will be new shelter units in his municipality in the next 6 months.
