San Jose man killed in Santa Cruz Mountains crash identified as Oscar Elias Alvarado, 29, of San Jose According to a preliminary investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Alvarado was riding with 30-year-old Edson R. Marin, also of San Jose, when the Volkswagen Golf driven by Marin crossed into oncoming lanes on Highway 35 west of Saratoga, went off the road and hit a tree before plummeting down an embankment and into a fence. CHP officials said the passenger side was badly damaged in the initial impact and Alvarado suffered major injuries. Both men were taken to the hospital, where Alvarado died. Marin suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
