San Marcos to expand testing for lead in water By Sean Collins Walsh- American-Statesman Staff The city of San Marcos is expanding its search for the source of elevated lead levels found in the water supply to the entire city, not just the area around the Hays County Government Center where the contamination was discovered. On Tuesday, the city will take samples from 26 sites across the city, including the original six near the county building on Stagecoach Trail, “just to make sure that those elevated readings are isolated to that one area and not systemic to the entire system,” San Marcos spokesman Trey Hatt said. Results are expected Thursday or Friday. County employees in July reported discolored water at the government center, which has been open for three years, and subsequent tests by the county revealed that the contamination was coming from the municipal water supply, not the county building. The city then tested six sites surrounding the building on Sept. 4 and found three of the locations had lead concentrations above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “action level.” It then flushed the system before testing the sites again Sept. 8 and found that two of the samples exceeded the EPA level. Those two were not among the three from the first tests, meaning that five of the six at one point showed high levels of lead.
