Sanate C’ttee Meets Rivers’ Lawmakers, PDP Wants Chinda’s Attackers Arrested Members of the Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration yesterday met with the two factions of the Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt, in an attempt to find a lasting solution to the feud in the state legislature. The committee led by Senator Kabiru Gaya is in Rivers State to investigate the circumstances that led to the fracas on the Assembly’s floor, which led to the hospitalisation of some lawmakers. LEADERSHIP Weekend learned that the committee met with the 27 lawmakers loyal to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi at a state government-owned building in the Old Government Reserved Area (GRA), Port Harcourt and the five lawmakers loyal to the minister of state for education, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike in an undisclosed location in the state capital. The outcome of the meetings remained sketchy as at the time of filing this report but a source told LEADERSHIP Weekend on the condition of anonymity that the parley centered on how to bring lasting peace to the House and the state. He said the suspension of the chairman of Obio/Akpor local government area, Prince Timothy Nsirim, his deputy, Hon. Solomon Eke and 17 councillors as well as appeal on Hon. Evans Bipi to rescind his claim to the position of the speaker were discussed. The senators had on Thursday met with Governor Amaechi, the commissioner of police, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu and the state director of the Department of State Security (DSS), Mr Olusegun Agbaje. Meanwhile, the People’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has called for the arrest, and prosecution of all those involved in the attack on the member representing Obio/Akpor constituency in the Assembly, Hon Michael Okechukwu Chinda Chinda, who is lying critically ill at the Saint Patrick’s Hospital, Ogbunabali, Port Harcourt, was injured during a free-for- all among the lawmakers on Tuesday. In a statement issued by Jerry Needam, media adviser to the PDP state chairman, he said the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the attack on the lawmaker, would prevent a recurrence of such unruly acts. Lamenting the worsening condition of the injured lawmaker, the party said not even in the worst democracies of the world can a lawmaker wilfully premeditate and position to hack a colleague. 7 RELATED TOPIC TAGS News Cover Stories state legislature Rivers State House Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration Democratic Party Department of State Security Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi Olusegun Agbaje Hon Kabiru Gaya Mbu Joseph Mbu Michael Okechukwu Chinda Timothy Nsirim Solomon Eke minister of state Governor States of Nigeria Rivers State Obio- Akpor Port Harcourt Rotimi Amaechi Amaechi Rivers State government Magnus Ngei Abe Politics
