Sands of Time and Deep Space April 7, 2014, Cherry Plain S.P., NY A peculiar shot for a peculiar trip. Skies were crystal clear a few hours after sunset last night, so I decided to retire very early and get up at 2am to catch the Spring incarnation of the MIlky Way at Cherry Plain State Park. I awoke at 1:30, looked out my window and saw a few stars through the screen so jumped up and prepped for the twenty some mile trip. As I stepped out to pack the car, my heart sank. Hardly a star to be seen and high level clouds moving in from the west. It took me several minutes to reboost my moral and decide that I might as well go anyway. I was dressed and packed to go, so off I went. Upon arrival at the park, the Milky Way was socked in behind cloud cover but the western sky showed mild signs of clearing. I had plenty of time to set up, so puttered about and experimented with a few settings. Gradually the clouds cleared a bit except for the south at galactic center. Wisps of clouds moved about at random like ghostly apparitions, and about 4 am a bit of fog started to roll over the mountain ridge across the lake. Finally, there it was. The Milky Way in all its glory arched over the mountain and flanked by oddly scattered cirrus clouds mostly under the dome. I began shooting as rapidly as possible to make my panoramic. 6 exposures of mostly sky and 6 of beach, sand, mountain and trees. About the time I wrapped it up, The clouds began to close in again and the twilight of dawn began to shimmer on the ridge. When I got home and stitched this together I was pleasantly surprised at just how unique and how well it came out. One of the most important lessons I have learned from photography is patience. More often than not, I have been rewarded if I just let time and light play themselves out. The blueness on the far ridge is the bit of fog that rolled in which added some interesting shades of color to the mix.
