Sandy Point Morning Flight, Etc, 10/21. Although the radar showed only a light flight overnight last night, I – having been away – was jonesing for a Sandy Point visit, so with a light westerly wind I headed in to “my office” anyway. I was hoping that the morning re-determined migration would be augmented by crepuscular/diurnal migrants. And sure enough: 7:00-8:06am 35F, Clear, Light west. 181 American Robins 34 Dark-eyed Juncos 20 American Pipits 16 Canada Geese 14 Yellow-rumped Warblers 5 Unidentified 4 Golden-crowned Kinglets 3 Palm Warblers 3 Swamp Sparrows 3 American Goldfinches 2 Hermit Thrushes 1 Common Loon 1 Killdeer 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Eastern Bluebird 1 Cedar Waxwing 1 White-throated Sparrow Total = 291 Not much, but the pipit count was decent, and it was simply good to be back! Afterwards, I took a swing through the Goose Fields. 760 Canada Geese was a season-to-date high count, but no rarities yet. A Pectoral Sandpiper along Greely Road in Cumberland was a nice treat, however. With a busy day in the big city, I squeezed in an hour along the Eastern Promenade. Although I wasn’t there until 11am, it was still fairly birdy, highlighted by a Blue-headed Vireo, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, a good mix of the expected sparrows, and my first ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER of the season.
