Sania Mirza appointed as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia: United Nations (UN) Women announced the appointment of Indian tennis superstar and youth icon, Sania Mirza, as its Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. The organisation is dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment. She became the first South Asian woman to be appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador. The other Goodwill Ambassadors include British actor Emma Watson, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman, HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand, and Indian actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar. She became the first Indian to break into the World Tennis Association’s Top 50 rankings. Sania Mirza is one of the most successful women’s tennis players of India. She has won two Grand Slams in mixed doubles, viz., Australian Open (2012) and French Open (2009). In both the finals she paired with Mahesh Bhupathi. For her achievements she has been awarded by the Government of India with the honours of Padma Shri and the Arjuna award. She has been a role model to many children, including girls, to break barriers and strive for their goals in life and career choices.
