Sans seating facility patients squat on corridor floor outside GBPH Wards, MS negates demand RAZIA BEGUM PORT BLAIR, JAN 20/-/ The otherwise well equipped premier GB Pant Hospital here is not without its share of some avoidable shortcomings. Patients and their attendants squatting on the floor of the corridor outside the Ortho Ward, Surgical Ward I & II and even on the staircase steps presents a sorry sight. The doctors examining patients in their chambers attached to the Wards, besides the OPDs, is a common practice. Shortage of space forces the patients to either stand in a queue for a long time, and those who are unable to stay steady on their feet have no other option but to sit on the floor. “They should place at least few chairs and benches outside these Wards to provide relief to the patients and their attendants,” demanded some persons. Let alone the outdoor patients, even the in-patients would like to have some seating arrangement outside the Wards. “Keep lying in the bed all the time is quite irksome. We take a stroll outside and would like to sit outside for a while, but since there are no chairs we are compelled to return to the Ward and either lie down on the bed or sit on the stool placed beside it,” lamented some patients while speaking to this correspondent. However, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. B.G. Lal would have none of it. “Earlier we had placed some chairs there but the people would then keep sitting for long hours. Even the private hospitals in the mainland don’t have such a facility outside the Wards. It’s not difficult to place few chairs outside the Wards but then the people would keep occupying them from morning till evening unnecessarily crowding the place,” the MS said negating the popular demand.
