Santa Lucia In Steiner Waldorf schools around the world, the festival of Santa Lucia is an important yet quiet festival, marked by a small group of children who are chosen to be the Santa Lucia angels. They often practice in secret, not letting their classmates know that they are participating in the festival - so it is a wonderful surprise on the day of celebration itself. The story of Santa Lucia dates back to the Middle Ages. She was known for bringing care and food to people in a difficult time of famine. Her day of celebration traditionally falls on the 13th December, (the longest night of the year in the old Julian calendar). Dressed in white often with a red sash, they walk throughout the school, singing the Santa Lucia song, marking the Christmas season. With one child wearing a wreath of candles upon her head, representing Santa Lucia herself, whose hands were free to feed the hungry. It is an enchanting experience both for the children who participate as well as all those who watch this most magical procession, as new life and light is brought to the winter months ahead.
