Sarkis Naoum clearly wrote The Allamah (The Scholar), a treatise on the life and thoughts of late senior Shiite scholar Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, with Lebanons entangled Shiite community in mind. In a lengthy question and answer session with the influential Shiite religious figure, who died in 2010 at age 74, Naoum tackles everything from Fadlallahs childhood in Iraqs holy city of Najaf and the Islamist activism that he introduced and championed throughout his career, to the 1985 attempt on his life and his reputation as Hezbollahs spiritual guide. In reality, according to Naoum, it was Shiites – both in Lebanon and elsewhere in the region – who were the greatest opponents of Fadlallahs modernist and moderate view of Islam. Naoum, who was introduced to Fadlallah by a mutual friend in the 1980s and over the years became one of the scholars closest confidantes, reveals that he had mulled over the idea of writing the memoirs for quite some time. The first book, The Allamah, is Fadlallahs memoir, and comprises a concise introduction penned by Naoum and around 185 pages detailing their in-depth 2001 question-and-answer session.
