Sasha Frere-Jones (The New Yorker) on Unsound Festival Krakow. newyorker/culture/cultural-comment/everyday-messiahs-best-music-2014 The most intense musical experience I had this year was a week spent in Krakow for the Unsound Festival. A decade old now, and with satellite events in New York, Adelaide, and other cities, the Unsound Festival’s mother-ship show is still in Poland. The curators, Mat Schulz and Gosia Płysa, have organized a festival that articulates another reason not to worry about the state of music. In the course of dozens of shows, I saw a young audience watch improvisation, electronic music, live bands, notated music, and film. Artists and friends, backstage at the Hotel Forum, talked about mutual admiration, even if Russell Haswell, Lotic, Ben Frost, and Evian Christ have little in common at the level of sound.
