Saturday 17th January 2015 Central Midlands League Premier Division North THORESBY COLLIERY WELFARE 0 GLAPWELL 2 Glapwell put the brakes on Thoresby’s title hopes at the same time as lifting themselves into contention with a thoroughly deserved win at Fourth Avenue. Skipper Liam Mason and Midfielder Chris Rhodes returned to a Thoresby side as the only changes to the starting line-up from the team which won 5-0 at Sherwood Colliery last week. Glapwell’s line-up included skipper Adam Barratt, Ashley Grayson, Neil Grayson, Lee Naughton and Jordan Hall. Right from the off it looked like goalmouth action would be at a premium as both sides put in plenty of endeavour but lacking in quality. Indeed, a number of promising moves were spoiled by poor passing as midfield became clogged with grit and determination rather than positive creation. Ryan Hopkins in the Glapwell goal will hardly have had an easier afternoon in his entire career. Lewis Bingham provided a half chance for a Dean Short header but it was easily cleared by a Glapwell defence which did little wrong all afternoon. Tom Moody made a run forward only to be brought down on the edge of the penalty area and Bingham put the resultant free kick high over the bar. Tom Cooke’s cross might have provided the pass to break the deadlock but Short and Sam West both went for the same ball and the chance was lost. Glapwell threatened at the other end through Lee Naughton but his cross rolled along the top of the bar and behind. There was a tad of fortune about the Glapwell lead three minutes before the break. ADAM KIMBERLEY’s high cross was challenged for by Josh Parfitt and this appeared to put Sam Smith off and the ball nestled nicely just inside the upright with neither getting a touch. And before the interval arrived clever work by Ash Grayson provided a chance for Adam Barratt who shot wastefully high over the bar. Sam Rhodes dashed in with perfect timing to concede a corner when West’s pass looked like putting Cooke through early in the second half, but Glapwell were now looking the better side and appearing comfortably in control. Parfitt moved onto a Sam Rhodes cross and headed wide, and then Rhodes put Parfitt in to round the onrushing Smith and then shoot wide. ADAM KIMBERLEY made sure his second goal of the game would be better than his first when he cut inside on 63 minutes to fire an excellent shot into the top corner of the net from around 30 yards. This goal ensured that the game became even tighter as a flurry of substitutions packed midfield and snubbed any likely threat of further goals. Neil Grayson belied his half century of years to orchestrate things at the back superbly supported by the unflappable and composed Tom Robley. There was a spirited revival by Thoresby towards the end but the Glapwell defence was in no mood to part with their hard-earned lead and fully deserved victory.
