Saturday, 29 March 2014 Is it Spring yet? ... sort of. Progress on two fronts: - Barney gets a day out with no coat! Warmed up to not quite 60F/15C so I cut him some slack and let him out. He was loving it and the two of them romped a bit before settling in to graze - ground and ice have finally thawed enough to get the round pen reassembled. Its still not round because some were still stuck, but its close and connected. That will give us a place to separate them for chow and give Barney a better chance to actually finish without being pushed around by Troy. Also shifting Barney to a different feed mix to try to get some weight back on him. He went off his feed in the doldrums of winter and when the eye injury made it hurt to chew. Were going to aim at chunking him up a bit, but slowly. Last thing we need is to cause problems. Some people forget that too much grain feed can lead to an impaction colic and that high energy feed plus high octane fresh spring grass can lead to systemic inflammation, laminitis. Thats a severe inflammation of the lining inside the hooves making it incredibly painful if not impossible to stand. Medically different, but maybe physically analogous to gout ...
