Saturday, August 30: The Power of Knowing That Someone Cares In those times when we feel alone and forgotten, it is powerful to know - without question - that someone cares. Its numbing to feel that life is caving in on all sides. Its as if someone has tied me up tightly, placed a blindfold over my eyes, and walked out of the room, locking the door on the way out. No matter how loudly I call out for help, no one answers. At times like these, we need to know that we are not alone, and that we have in our lives people who care and who are there for us, no matter what. Yet how easy it is to take for granted those closest to us who do reach out, regularly and with love, seeking to enrich us and bring joy into our lives. We somehow ignore and take them for granted. In the process, without meaning to, we hurt them deeply and reject their overtures of love and concern. Is it possible that we have learned to thrive on negativity? Do we believe that our greatest needs are being met through constantly complaining and acting as if the sky is always dark and stormy, threatening to come crashing down on us? I am so grateful to be in a place where I thrive on the positive and embrace joy, rather than loneliness and misery. How thankful I am to have in my life a wife, children, extended family, and friends who accept me as I am, and love me, no matter what. I suffered unnecessarily for years, questioning my worth and comparing my life and accomplishments to that of my peers. How foolish!. Because I love myself in a healthy way and believe that I am loved, I can love others. Because I value myself, and believe that others value me, I can lift up, encourage, and value others. When Im feeling down, one person has the ability to lift me up; that is powerful, life-saving, and perhaps one of the greatest gifts that anyone can offer. It is my hope and prayer that, in reading this, you will feel loved, valued, and appreciated. Receive these gifts, and share them with others who may be experiencing the darkness that Ive described. Take a chance; reach out and touch someone who needs a positive word. The wonder is that both you and the one you touch will experience joy. Blessings and peace, De
