Saturday, December 27: Navigating the Curves I had been driving for less than a year, but was at the place where I felt comfortable, especially in traffic. I had even developed that innate sense of knowing how fast to go when approaching a curve. My friend, Richie, aka Rabbit, was sitting in the passenger seat of my 1950 Chevy as we returned home from Forest Lodge after a day of swimming and trying to pick up girls. It was dark, and the road was full of curves. The thrill of driving fast with the radio blaring and the windows rolled down, however, was more important than safety. I was doing nearly 90 mph when I realized that the road ahead turned sharply to the right. Visible in my high beams was a low, concrete wall that protected cars on a small bridge. Rabbit screamed, and placed both hands on the metal dashboard. I braked as hard as possible without losing control. Seat belts and air bags were non-existent. Miraculously, I safely navigated the curve. Rabbit cursed me out for the next several miles, and I recall thanking God repeatedly all the while as I drove the speed limit. Real life has many curves: a sudden, unexpected death, being laid off, fire and flood, a break-in, an auto accident, a broken bone, loss of sight, a failing grade . . . the list is endless. Learning to navigate these curves takes more than luck. We need to develop skills, but we also need faith. No matter what Im facing, I believe that God will enable me to navigate each situation successfully. This doesnt mean that I wont have difficulties and setbacks. It certainly doesnt mean that my roads will always be flat and straight. Faith in God gives me just enough light, however, so that I can take the next step. No curve ever again will throw me into a tailspin. I will expect difficult times, and my faith will see me through. I cannot imagine living in any other way. Blessings and peace, De
