Saturday I walked into work to find a huge line of people waiting. My co-worker had not finished counting his drawer, so I was unable to log onto my system until he was finished. It left only one cashier open to handle this large group of people until I could sign in. One of the men in the crowd became disgruntled. He began yelling and demanded to know if anyone else worked there and asked if we were going to open another register anytime soon. I had put up with grumpy people throughout the week, and had hit my limit at that particular moment. Through clenched teeth I said Sir, I have to wait for my co-worker to finish counting his drawer to sign on. He continued to rant. This is america. Its a free country and I can say what I want, thats my right isnt it? Im aware its a free country I was growing more frustrated as he continued to yell. Then there was that warning voice in my head. Dont lose your cool, you need this job. I tried to keep calm. I finally got signed on, and he was my second customer. He continued to talk. Do you know whats wrong with this world? He said. I could not take it anymore. Yeah, I said flatly. There is too much hate and anger in this world. Oh god, Im toast I thought. What he did next surprised me. He smiled. I like you. He said. It completely caught me off guard. I composed myself and gave him a half smile, then continued to complete his transaction. He actually apologized to me and remained pleasant afterward. I handed him his change (ten bucks, consisting of two five dollar bills). He dropped five dollars in my hand then walked toward the door. I tried to give it back and insisted that it was his, but he waved his hand. He walked away and left me standing there with my mouth hanging open. Its always better to take the high road when it comes to dealing with difficult people...but every now and then it pays to stand up for yourself (In this case literally!). Who knew? My remaining customers could not stop laughing...
