Saturday July 12, 2014 – Day #193 1 Chronicles 12:19-14:17; Romans 1:1-17; Psalm 9:13-20; Proverbs 19:4-5 Congratulations on finishing the book of Acts! The book of Romans is the first of the Pauline Epistles. The word epistle equates to ‘letter’. The word Pauline equates to ‘written by Paul’. Paul wrote many of the epistles (letters) in the New Testament. This book (letter) was specifically written to the church in Rome. It’s helpful to know the intended recipient for letters like this because it will help us to keep things in context with the author’s intended message and to the surrounding circumstances. The theme here is ‘The Gospel of God’. Romans is believed to have been written between 57-58 AD. Romans 1:5 “….to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith….” Obedience that comes from faith. What do you suppose that means? Acts 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…” Are we also not ashamed of the gospel? Or, do we bite our tongues when opportunities to discuss it arise? It’s a tough question worth asking on a daily basis.
