Saturday, July 19th ... Live Demonstration of Wool Spinning at the Arabia Steamboat Museum. Back in the 1850s when cargo was being shipped out to the general stores from the Town of Kansas to Nebraska Territory, some folks could obviously buy ready made fabrics including heavy wools and even silk from China, but spinning your own wool yarn for everyday use would also have been common. On Saturday, July 19th, we will host a living history spinner in the Arabia Steamboat Museum’s own cabin display to spin wool as might have been done in one room cabins all across Missouri and the wild west. Melody Robinson is a spinstress of homemade yarns of a variety of fibers, and she will demonstrate wool spinning on a wheel as well as the drop spindle which has been common from ancient times to the present.
