Saturday, March 8 2014 Isaiah 58:1-12 Theologian Paul Hanson comments on this passage: “The appeal is an impassioned plea to reclaim authentic humanity by replacing cold, calculating self-interest with acts of loving kindness that restore genuine communal solidarity.” On a blog here in Elkhart talking about a shooting at a Martin’s Super Market that ended in the loss of three precious lives one woman shared how her desire for the restoration of our community lead her to commit an act of living kindness. The women posted: “Today is my daughter’s 21st birthday. So we decided to go to Martin’s #17 on Bristol Street. We grabbed an Elkhart Strong t-shirt and headed in to do our shopping. As we waited to get checked out behind a lovely lady with three younger kids we waited for her total and told the clerk we would like to pay for her groceries. When the mom recovered from her shock we presented her with the t-shirt and told her we did this to honor Krystle Dikes and Rachelle Godfread. We asked that she pay it forward to some other stranger in their honor. She agreed with a huge smile on her face and we left with our eggs, vegetable oil, and a full heart.” In response to such a horrible tragedy, these two women decided to do something about it. Today, right now, how is God calling you to reach out with loving acts of kindness? Rev. Robert Van Ess, 1st Congregational UCC
