Saturday night went to Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, just outsid Canning, NS, to watch two plays. The first was As You like It, which is set in a wood, and so was ideally suited to their outdoor stage. While Rosalind and company spoke of love under the sky, birds flitted and sang among the surrounding trees. It was magical, and the cast were absolutely first-rate. Later, after the sun went down, we gathered around the fire while the same actors, now in jeans and comfortable clothes, recited the Iliad. Not the whole Iliad, of course, or I would still be there, but an hour-long passage (in iambic pentameter) about the deaths of Patroclus and Hector, while the gods watched and interfered on both sides. Seriously, if you can do one thing this summer, go and sit by the fire and watch/listen to the Iliad! It is pure magic!
