Saturday will be our 100th parkrun and our second anniversary is 4 only weeks after that - amazing how time flies when you are having fun! So with a little info and a photo from The Wynnum Manly Historical Society we continue our look at local history and landmarks along our beautiful Bayside course we move onto the places around the pier (3.5/4.8km).... First up I am sure few people could miss the totem poles which stand tall at the end of the pier. We run past them twice each week and where we always have one of our fabulous marshals (first photo). This art work by Stephen Newton was commissioned by the Rotary Club in 2003 to celebrate 50 years working in the community. The poles are part of the original 1882 timber Number 2 Jetty, with Jetty No. 1 being the other side of Wynnum Creek. Jetty #2 was replaced by the current concrete jetty during the depression years of the 1930s when the Wading Pool was also constructed - both as a means of providing local employment in a time of great need. As well as the Totem Poles there are a number of silver coloured fish and bright mosaics by Stephanie Outridge-Field (photos 2&3) that lead you down the pier. After your next parkrun why not follow this trail and read about the ancient wisdom of the local Quandamooka peoples who have lived and travelled around the bay and the islands for at least 40,000 years. Finally there is a photo of how the pier looked 103 years ago for a parkrun walk 1911-style!
