Saul Becomes Jealous of David Robert A Heinlein was quoted in saying: A competent and self-confident person is incapable of jealousy in anything. Jealousy is invariably a symptom of neurotic insecurity. While David lived in full confidence of God, Saul lived in doubt. Which character do we ourselves portray ~ David or Saul? David was the opposite of Saul. David had absolute confidence in God (as demonstrated in his facing Goliath). Saul did not include God as a factor in his decisions (all he wanted was Gods protection; he did not think in terms of honoring God). David was a man of faith who placed matters in Gods hands. Saul was faithless and took matters in his own hands. David had such confidence in God that he believed God was at work in his dire distress--he often asked for more faith and protection, but he frequently declared his God knew what He was doing. Saul commonly questioned Gods decisions/actions and sought to justify his own. King Saul seemed to think God operated capriciously, but he (Saul) functioned on the basis of reality. It is essential for us to understand that Davids attitude toward King Saul was founded on his attitude toward God......... God knows what He is doing; a person must not second guess God! Thus, when God makes Saul King of Israel, that was Gods decision, not Davids. David understood this truth: leave Gods affairs in Gods hands! ~ 1 Samuel 18
