Savannah police officers sue city and chief for racial discrimination privateofficer SAVANNAH, GA Oct 7 2013 – Two metro police officers are suing Savannah Metro’s top brass and the city of Savannah for racial discrimination. Both officers claim Chief Willie Lovett said they need not apply for a promotion because the position was reserved for a white applicant. Attorneys for Police Captain Dean Fagerstrom tell WJCL News the Metro Police Department is working on a quota system. Fagerstrom has been with Metro Police for more than 30 years. A lawsuit filed September 6, 2013 says Fagerstrom, an Asian American, is more than qualified to become a police Major. During a staff meeting in 2011, Chief Willie Lovett announced a promotional opportunity for the rank of Major, and the lawsuit accuses Lovett of telling his officers, “You all know this is a white position.” Fagerstrom applied anyway and the position was filled months later by a white officer. Fagerstrom is now suing Lovett and the City of Savannah for monetary damages, mental and emotional distress, plus a promotion to the rank of Major. Fagerstrom is the second Police Captain to do so this year. In January, Metro Police Captain Charles Hall, an African American with more than 20 years experience, filed a similar suit in District Court. He applied for the rank of Major and claims he too was overlooked for that position because of race. WJCL
