Saved! All of Us! Saved! I was visiting a dear friend for a few days of rest. New Year’s Eve was quite dramatic because: Suddenly, darkness. A power outage occurred that sent us back to the 19th century. We lit candles, there was a fire in the fireplace, I thought it was quite romantic. Three hours later, we were rudely returned to the 21st century, lights on, computers working. Said I: “We are never going to forget so dramatic a New Year.” And then, the next day, yesterday, reality topped my words. “Fire, fire,” and we all managed to flee in our nightclothes, some out to the open road, others down to the beach. The fire raced, then exploded, destroying the entire house except for one room, the very room where I had been staying. All human beings were spared as was the family dog. Cats are still missing. A day later, we are still numbed, soldiering on through the day. This is the second time I have been spared a fiery death. At a hotel in Woodstock earlier in the 21st century, again we fled down a hallways of black smoke, a wall of red fire to our right, and when we made it outside, turned back, looked up—there was our room in flames and that room came crashing down before our smoke-filled, horrified eyes. We benched “gomel” as soon as I got back to New York City, thanking God for having for spared.
