Saving the taxpayer money: You will love this: Today I received a letter from TRICARE stating they were attempting to recoup the tremendous amount of $2.09 overpayment to a provider. The envelope cost 40 cents to send. The form letter had to be filled in by someone on an expensive computer who was probably being paid top dollar. (Even at minimum wage, it adds up to more than $1.69 that is left.) Since they must have sent a notice to the provider asking for a refund, it cost another 40 cents. (Ooops, now its down to $1.29) Then there is the cost of the paper for the letter itself, plus the Privacy Act Statement they included on a separate sheet, and the envelope. (Lets say 9 cents, just for the heck of it - now we have $1.20 remaining)... And they assigned a case number and a serial number to this farce, which means someone being paid another large salary will have to file and maintain the records and then check to be sure the $2.09 is received. I figure it must have cost at least $120.00 - but we got the money back! Then, when the fabulous amount has been recouped, someone will have to make up a deposit slip and take it to the bank, or maybe write yet another form letter to the bank and send it to them, yeah, in an envelope with another .40 cents in stamps. (Wow, now we made $1.00) Plus, they will probably make sure to send both the provider and me a copy of the receipt, or at least a letter to let me know they collected the $2.09 and I don’t have to worry about it – at least until the next letter. (Now we are below $1.00, but every penny counts, just ask the IRS!) And, in the beginning of all this, who the hell was the well-paid accountant who issued a check with an overage of $2.09 in the first place? Was he fired for this horrendous mistake? No, you CANNOT FIRE a Civil Servant working for any government….and so, it goes on… Add this all up, and you can see how much they are saving the taxpayers… Don’t you love government bureaucracy??
