Saw Zhang Yimou’s Coming Home today at GV Plaza. It is certainly a movie worth seeing. Gong Li as Feng Wanyu reminds me of my favourite actress, Meryl Streep who played Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. She is very good. So are Chen Dao Ming who acted as her husband Lu Yanshi and Zhang Huiwen their daughter, Dandan. As I sat through the two hour movie, I could not help visualising the chaos China went through during the Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976). It is good that such a film is made about ordinary people who were traumatised by China’s Cultural Revolution. The fact that it is made by the Chinese themselves make it doubly great. I am sure it will have a cathartic effect on the Chinese people. Hopefully, the Tiananmen Incident will one day be made into a film. People need to be reminded that we should never trust a government fully. Mass movements carried out on the instructions of those in power are always dangerous. Perhaps one day, Singapore may also have a film about the atrocities committed by the PAP in the 1960s. Do we have a playwright or novelist who could write about one or two of our heroes, not Lee Kuan Yew but someone who had been incarcerated for longer than the period of the Cultural Revolution (@Teo Soh Lung 2014).
