Say HELLO to Mr. DEElightful, the friendly chickadee. He flies to my finger and then to my hand for a bit of black walnut . . . often several times a day. Sometimes, though, he is gone for weeks or even months, but then returns and KNOWS me IMMEDIATELY. For those of you who dont think birds can recognize and distinguish among different people, Mr. DEE certainly can. Can YOU tell one chickadee from another? Hmm. Maybe that says something about relative intelligence. Anyway, its a neat thought to ponder. Ive had an American robin who would fly to me and stay on my lap for several minutes, a red breasted thatch fly to my hand for food and a hummingbird who flew to me as I hold a small sugar water feeder.
