Say bye to the Bye. Yes, it is Sunday. But there is no Super Bowl - TopicsExpress

Say bye to the Bye. Yes, it is Sunday. But there is no Super Bowl this weekend. Thatll be next Sunday. There is a football game of sorts- the Pro Bowl is being played today, at the University of Phoenix Stadium, the site of the Super Bowl next Sunday. This represents a change from its longtime home of Honolulu. The Pro Bowl is a silly game, easily the most ridiculous of all the team sports such games, and the NFLs moving it to the bye week in 2010 represents a tacit admission that having such a football-less weekend is a dumb idea. Even worse, now one doesnt even see the stars from the respective Super Bowl teams in it- what coach is gonna let his players participate in this and possibly have them injured? The two-week layoff between the conference championships (and the league championships before the 1970 merger) was simply intended to allow for an extra week of increased hype for the game. Nothing more. Some point out that injured players have an extra week to recover. That is true, although why not then have an extra week between ALL post-season games for the same reason? Ive noticed that the extra week of waiting, IMO, hurts the weaker team as they are more eager to play right away. And while many SBs are fine games, last years reminds us of how awful they can often be. Occasionally the quirks of the Gregorian Calendar lead to the SB being played on the weekend following the conference championships- and, generally, those half-dozen or so games seem to have been good ones. But, invariably, the two-week layoff returns. So here are my suggestions. Just dump the stupid two-week layoff. The game gets more than enough hype as it is. Play the damned game. And, while youre at it, stop wasting so much time on game day before the kickoff... nobody cares that youve minted a special coin just for the game! And dump the Pro Bowl, also... football is a game in which the chance of serious injury is much higher than other sports, and changing the rules to prevent this just makes the game silly. But Hawaii, one of my favorite states, does deserve a NFL football game. Why not have a regular season matchup there, just like London? Many teams would love to play a mid-season game there. And get rid of the stupid regular season bye week also, while youre at it... I hate the fact that from the fourth week of the season to the twelfth week the 32 teams have not all played the same amount of games. Byes are for chess tournaments with 13 entrants, not football. Its just a game, not the Second Coming. If its the Ultimate Game, how come theyre playing another one next year? (Duane Thomas) youtube/watch?v=GzqbTyuYS-o
