Elle fit un véritable triomphe en France. Elle est consacrée à Joe Jackson, une star du baseball qui tomba en disgrâce en 1919, avec dautres joueurs des White Sox de Chicago, dans une histoire de parties truquées. La célèbre phrase fut lancée par un jeune admirateur désabusé qui cria avec angoisse « Say it ain’t so, Joe! » (« Dis-moi que c’est pas vrai, Joe ! »). Lécriture de cette chanson a été déclenchée par un documentaire décrivant lhistoire par le scandale du Watergate et relatant le scandale des Black Sox.
