Sanral’s plans to introduce e-tolls in KZN have been halted last week by minister of transport Dipuo Peters, who said in a statement that Sanral should first focus on resolving some of the challenges emanating from the introduction of electronic tolling in some parts of the Gauteng province. The statement comes after Logashri Sewnarain, regional manager of Sanral in KZN, said Sanral planned to introduce e-tolls in sections of the N3 Marianhill and N2 Oribi toll plazas by November in an attempt to improve the traffic flow. However minister Dipuo explained that any decision to introduce any form of tolling in any part of the country could only be taken in consultation with authorities in that province. She added: “I therefore wish to clarify that reports that a decision has been taken to introduce electric tolling in some parts of KwaZulu Natal are untrue. Also Sanral came back on Sewnarain’s statement saying the organisation was not considering introducing additional tolls in KZN but was merely considering an alternative method of payment. The introduction of a possible electronic collection would only be finalised once a comprehensive consultative process had been completed. Sanral ceo, Nazir Alli, clarified: “We reiterate what the Minister has said. There are no plans to introduce new tolls in KZN or e-tolling as it exists in Gauteng. In Gauteng, we upgraded the road network and since it is a multi-lane free flow tolling system, gantries were erected to record the passage of vehicles and the transactions. This is not what is proposed for KZN. Critically, road users will have the choice between using manual lanes or e-tag lanes.”
