Scary story with happy ending. I went out in the twilight tonight - TopicsExpress

Scary story with happy ending. I went out in the twilight tonight to let the dogs in for dinner and the evening, and Duchess was gone. Duchess weighs 110 pounds so it is not easy for her to be invisible. Paige and I looked everywhere in a rising panic. I could not figure out why she was not coming out unless she had had a heart attack or something. Then we realized, having eliminated all other possibilities, that she must be somehow under the back porch stairs. And there she was—I saw her with a flash light. But she did not come out even though she always comes when called. I was in a panic again that she was too ill to stand(I could see enough to know that she was breathing so I knew she was alive.) I could not find a saw to clear away the spiny bushes she had made her way through, so I just crawled in myself. She had crawled under a pipe that runs across the area and she had gotten wedged in such a way that she could not get out. I helped her into a position where she could move, and out she came. She is fine—she ate a good dinner and seems not upset. An ordinary dog would have cried and whined to let me know where she was. But Duchess is mute so she could not do anything but wait for rescue. Poor Duchess. She must have been scared. But she is fine now, and she will get extra petting this evening. Happy ending. But a good reason , if one needed one, not to let one’s dog run loose alone. All was well because she had to be somewhere in a relatively small space. If she had been roaming over a vast area, this could have been tragedy.
