Scene 1: Today while waiting patiently at the platform for the metro, I was busy scrolling through some pictures on Facebook which to my misery was close enough to reveal my insanity to the whole wide world (meaning the people on my FB list). But before I could attempt to untag myself from some of them, I felt a sudden tug on my sleeve! I looked around and saw a small boy asking me to show him my pictures! I obliged him knowing well he wont judge me in split seconds! When his curiosity got quenched, he joined his mother who until that time appeared to be least bothered about his son (this judgment was given by some enlightened woman standing next to me who thought that why she is so careless?). Scene 2: We all entered the metro and took our respective corners. I was about to take out my book, suddenly the enlightened woman (read: Ms opinionated) started giving lecture to the woman aapko hosh bhi hai? apka munna piche escalator pe rah gaya tha, aur aap madam aage aage befikr hokar chale ja rahi thi. By this time the little boy was jumping from one seat to another, creating a stir and amusement among the onlookers. The mother by that time looked exhausted and seemed to give back in verbose! But she could manage to squeeze out these lines only: I am trying to do my best! Since morning I am out with my son, hopping from one hospital to another in search of a better treatment for him so that he could start behaving like a normal kid, (basically the kid was hyperactive!!!) She complained that teachers in class have isolated him completely! Also the kid appeared to be an ill-mannered, since he was teasing an elderly lady so much so that the old woman twisted his ear in reaction! Seeing this the mother felt all the more embarrassed and took out her slipper to beat him (just to scare, I hope). Few of us intervened and tried to stop her. Then she was so agonized with the fact that what she has to go through coz of his son everywhere she goes. Scene 3: Then expert advises started pouring in. As a mother You should do that, stop giving him food for a day, the boy will mend his way! Or why dont you just slap him...or why dont you just show him to a doctor... Blah blah! Meanwhile I was observing the kid in my attempt to analyse his behavior whether he was actually a monster or a possessed child! But to my utter surprise, he was a perfectly normal child. He could read easily the Hindi scrolled on the electronic screen. Or where he refused to take a toffee from a woman when offered and looked at his mother for approval. The kid was absolutely normal.. Just because he doesnt fall into the typical convention of a society wherein the slightest of unruly behavior from a kid is reason enough to taunt/ rebuke a mother on not being able to fulfill her duty. Or simply declaring the child to be mad, insane! Who gives us this authority to question a mothers credibility on raising her own child. You probably seeing or experiencing this kind of behavior for the first time, imagine a mothers agony to go through all this 365 days 24*7. Doesnt she know that it has caused her enough pain or stress amongst her known people. Why keep telling a woman that shes not good enough in her role as a mother? Shouldnt it be the other way round for a change to encourage her that shes doing just fine.. It must be real hard for her to tackle a situation like this...or its ok if the kid behaves like this.. or everything will be fine( anyway you arent her relative who actually is bothered about kids well being). Why not encourage her, make her not feel humiliated or agonised or making her not predict beforehand that what kind of a backlash is coming her way! In fact a word or two of kindness shared, she might be able to gather herself in this lone fight and do more than/tackle better the existing situation. Compassion and encouragement are the key to lift someone from their misery. Lets not be indifferent to people who are not able to keep up! At the end of the day, it comes down to cause and effect! What we do unto others, will come back to us only!
