Scene from a novel in which two travelers, a daughter and father from Samoa, react to their visit to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem: Ive known for a long time that evil is everywhere, but I never thought it would be of this ferocity and greed. Did God desert us then? Did He forsake His chosen people? Why? The Holy Land in my soul now has almost no meaning measured up against this evil. You knew nothing about it, Dad. Now I do, and feel guilt for not having known. But you cant be held responsible for something you didnt know about! Whos to be held responsible then? The Nazis, the people and the nations who knew but did nothing to stop it. All of us are responsible for our history and our future, for all the evil deeds that were, are, and will be committed -- or left uncommitted. What about God? What about Him? He is God. His justice is more. He must have a very sick sense of justice! No, a very rich one...Every time we kill someone, we are killing Him. Excerpt from Albert Wendts Novel Ola
