Sciatica and the most common sciatica symptoms: Over 80% of the United states population will experience back pain at some point in their lives, especially for people over 50 years of age. Of those, sciatica is fairly common and studies suggest that as many as 40% of people will experience sciatic nerve pain, a pain that occurs along the path of the sciatic nerve from the lumbar spine region down into the extremities. This article will give a brief overview of sciatica and the most common symptoms of sciatica. Sciatica: Sciatica is a term used to describe back pain in the lumbar (lower) spine region along with a pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve - originating in the lumbar region and moving down through the hips, buttocks and leg (usually one leg - sciatica typically affects only one side of the body). Sciatica is not an actual medical condition but rather a symptom of another spine condition or disorder, most commonly a herniated disc (can also be referred to as a slipped or bulging disc), degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome and tumors in the spine. Injury or blunt trauma to the lumbar region of the spine can also result in sciatica. Sciatica Symptoms: The most common symptoms of sciatica are: * Back pain in the lumbar (lower) region accompanied by a weakness, pain, numbness and/or tingling in the lower extremities. The pain can be a dull ache in the back with a slight sharp pain down into the leg, or completely debilitating and extremely painful. * A common sympton is that after standing or sitting for extended periods of time you find that the symptoms listed above occur or increase in pain. * Unfortunately, much like when someone has bruised or broken ribs, sneezing, coughing or laughing will increase the pain the lower back and along the sciatic nerve pathway. * Because sciatic nerve pain can get worse at night, sciatica may make it difficult to get a good nights sleep. * Any physical activity that places stress on the spine (lifting, twisting, straining) will make sciatica symptoms worse. At SpineOne, we specialize in treating spine-related injuries using minimally-invasive procedures, including sciatica. dlvr.it/636l60
