Science and Quran: Orography: Mountains in Quran Earth is a reference text book used by many Universities. The author was Professor Emeritus Frank Press. He was the Science Advisor to former US president Jimmy Carter. He was the President of National Academy and Science (Washington, DC) for 12 years. He said in his book: Mountains have underlying Roots (Earth, Press and Siever, p. 435. Also see Earth Science, Tarbuck and Lutgens, p. 157) Quran says Surah: An Naba Ch:78 V:6-7 Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse, And the mountains as pegs? Quran refers to Mountains as Pegs. Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the surface of the ground and that these roots can reach several times their elevations above the surface of the ground. So the most suitable word to describe mountains on the basis of this information is the word ‘peg,’ since most of a properly set peg is hidden under the surface of the ground. The Theory of Mountain having deep roots were introduce only in 1865 by Astronomer Royal, Sir George Airy Mountains also play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth. They hinder the shaking of the earth. Quran says in Surah: An Nahl Ch:16 V:15 And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you;…… The Modern Theory of Plate Tectonics holds that mountains work as stabilizers for the earth. This knowledge about the role of mountains as stabilizers for the earth has just begun to be understood in the framework of plate tectonics since the late 1960’s. Did Prohet Muhammad (PBUH) predicted the true shape of mountains? How can anyone guess that Mountains have a deep roots? Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not Learned, how can he predict what Scientists have recently discovered with advance Scientific Equipment? Its because Quran was not written by Muhammad (PBUH) but it was a book revealed to him by Almighty Allah.
