Scotlands referendum and why it matters to you. The Thursday - TopicsExpress

Scotlands referendum and why it matters to you. The Thursday referendum poses the question to the Scottish people as to whether or not the Union remains intact or breaks apart indefinitely. Now I have my views and opinions on the matter, but for the sake of not wanting to start an argument, my inability to vote as Im a non resident of Scotland, or my fear my grandmother will find out that I have opposing views to her, Im inclined to keep my opinion to myself. However, there is another reason this referendum means more to than just the people of Scotland. This referendum, regardless of the outcome, has set a precedence that will shake any government to its core. In a world where unity amongst nations has been the at the forefront of every political agenda, it appears that the people of the nations are growing tired of governments who are looking to the outside to mask the issues which are happening within their own borders. It is evident that Scotland has had enough. And with that, they have taken the issue to the government. Scotlands referendum has brought light to the fact that governments can no longer ignore the call of their people without fear of consequence. Breaking from a Union which has existed since 1707 will allow people all around the world who are in a state or a Union to ask a simple question; Is this best for me? If you get enough of a coalition of people to answer No to that question, then the calls for independence will come. The democratic system will not work when you have a smaller state who is unhappy and can not make enough of a political movement to have their issues addressed. Unions around the world have been put on notice. From Texas, Western Australia, Quebec and Catalonia - these are all states in which rumblings for succession have begun and Scotland has simply paved the way. Whatever the outcome for the vote, the status quo is no longer acceptable. The people deserve better. One last note to all my Scottish friends and the people of Scotland; There are pros and cons to an independent Scotland but lets at the end of the day, before the vote we are Scottish and after the vote we will still be Scottish. Dont let this vote divide us.
