Scott Charles Mullins, 39, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, January 29, 2014. He was born on November 5, 1974 in Madison Heights, Michigan. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Scott, or as his childhood friends know him as “Bluegill”, will be remembered for his loving smile, charm, and no fear attitude. Scott was raised in Dickenson County where he graduated from Clintwood High School in 1993 and earned top honor at Dickenson County Vocational Center in the welding program. This resulted in a life-long occupation of welding. Upon graduation he attending Mountain Empire Community college and completed classes toward a welding certificate. In 1995 he moved to Burlington, North Carolina where he worked for Map Enterprises for over 10 years as a welding fabricator. He was so talented in his work that he quickly became the boss’s go-to man. He was proud member of the Boilermakers Union Local 456 of Rock Hill, South Carolina where he worked across the Eastern United States since 2003. Scott was resilient and prevailed through many hardships. He had a passion for fishing, barbequing, hiking, four-wheeling, reading, and lending a hand to his family and friends. Scott loved the mountains of Southwest Virginia, especially his sanctuary of Birch Knob. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Ferd & Icy McCowan and Garland Mullins and Great grandparents Charlie & Bessie Sluss and one step-brother, Stevie Combs. Survivors include: his precious daughter, Vanessa Faye Mullins, of Summerfield, North Carolina, his parents Connie Dean & Idella Mullins, Rosalie & Farris Fleming all of Clintwood. One sister, Summer (Jimmy) Runyon of Clintwood. One step-sister, Janet Deel of Dryden, VA; four step-brothers, Patrick Combs of Bristol VA, Dwain Fleming, Garry Fleming and Larry Fleming, all of Clintwood. One special niece, Casey Jane Wright. A special friend, Diane Haynes, numerous cousins, step nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends Active Pallbearers will include: Woody McCowan, James “Jimbo” Ramey, Brandon Dorton, Larry Fleming, Derick Robinson, Jesse Deel, David Combs, and Garry Fleming Honorary pallbearers will be: Patrick Combs, Ben Mullins, Denny Wright, Mike Adams, Dennis Powers and Lil’ Pat Combs Family will receive friends at Mullins Funeral Home in Clintwood on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. with funeral services to be conducted at 1:00 p.m. in celebration of Scott’s life. Bill Rose will officiate. A family graveside service and burial will follow at The Stone Family Cemetery, The Flats Rd, Skeetrock, VA. Mullins Funeral Home and staff are serving the Mullins Family.
