Scott and I are in the process of rehabbing a property on the north edge of Des Moines. A week ago, a young women came over to see who was working there to ask if she could work cleaning anything for money. Her name is Amy and we do have some work she can do. We have heard bits of her story, which is one of a person in the middle of a streak of very bad luck. She came here from San Diego. Back there, her and her husband owned a spa. But the spa and the husband are no longer in the picture. We don’t know the details of why. She came back to Des Moines where she grew up, to be closer to family because she was pregnant. She got a job at an insurance company downtown. The insurance company suffered damage from a fire and had to lay off people. She was one to go (she thinks because she was pregnant). In this past year, her mother and sibling have each moved to different cities leaving her without family here in Des Moines. Her car was totaled this past winter when rain turned to ice. She admits it was her fault because she was just not remembering what it was like to driving on ice. So she has a 6 month old baby girl and is living in a rented upstairs of a single family type residence. No car, No job. I haven’t heard her complain about her situation. I did hear disappointment in her voice when she said her mother had moved to Iowa Falls. We have some work we can give her and she can bring her baby and a playpen so she can tend to her as needed. I wish I was a millionaire so I could do more.
