Scripture is clear when it comes to the poor: “Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to” (Deuteronomy 15:10). It may provide hope to an elderly Holocaust survivor who can barely afford housing and utilities. It may comfort a Ukrainian Jew now faced with even greater economic hardship. Together, we can provide “the least of these” with a month’s worth of food necessities, as well as with the special foods needed to celebrate Passover.
