Scuba peeps… Last year while scuba diving in the Philippines I met a gentleman who told me about the Socorros Islands. Sometimes referred to as the Mexican Galapagos, these volcanic islands are located about 240 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and attract large concentrations of fish, sharks and the biggest mantas you could ever dream of. I love pelagics so I just had to visit this part of the world. I was totally blown away! Schools of hammerheads, mantas that are 20 feet across, whale sharks, silky, white tip, silver tip and galapagos sharks, dolphin…its all there in abundance. What made this trip particularly interesting is that we participated in some of the shark research Dr Mauricimo Hoyos was doing while onboard. We helped out with catching, tagging, measuring, implanting transmitters, exchanging receivers, etc. It was an incredible experience learning about shark behavior and the Fins Attached initiative. Mauricimo is extremely passionate about preserving shark populations around the world. I found his presentations INFORMATIVE, COMPELLING and INFECTIOUS! Awesome human being, very cool guy.
