Sean Hannity had Democratic Representative Luis Gutierrez on his show last night to talk about the government shutdown and certain provisions of ObamaCare. During the interview, Hannity grew increasingly frustrated with the Democrat as he repeatedly dodged the questions that were put to him. Hannity started off by talking about the most recent offer made by the House Republicans to the Senate. That offer includes funding the government but with two caveats: •Members of Congress would be subject to the same ObamaCare rules as the rest of the country •The so-called “individual mandate” (the provision requiring people to have health insurance) would be pushed back one year because the employer (the provision requiring businesses to provide health insurance to employees) was already pushed back one year “Tell me why you would be against that. Is that fair?” Hannity asked the Congressman. Gutierrez went on to avoid the “is it fair?” question. He said that he wanted a “clean” continuing resolution. By “clean”, he meant without the amendments offered by the Republicans designed to make ObamaCare more fair. He also made the following astute observation: “It is what it is.” That’s a line that probably won’t resonate with people whose insurance rates have skyrocketed thanks to ObamaCare. Congressman Gutierrez then went on to say that he wasn’t getting any special treatment under the new health care law. Hannity pointed out that he was getting special treatment under ObamaCare. He said that he was getting a 72% subsidy that is only available to members of Congress, but not to the rest of the American people. You can read more about this special carve-out for legislators right here. In response to this, Gutierrez simply dodged the question again by saying that he originally didn’t think that ObamaCare went far enough. Hannity pressed further, stating that members of Congress get an exemption from ObamaCare and that big businesses get an exemption from the employer mandate for a year. The Republicans, Hannity noted, wanted to make things more fair by getting rid of the Congressional exemption and delaying the individual mandate by one year just as the employer mandate was delayed by one year. “Why wouldn’t you support that?” Hannity asked. Gutierrez replied that he thinks he should be treated the same as everyone else, but then never actually answered the question. “I have the same ability to join the health care system that anybody on my staff, that anyone on the Capitol has…” “Congressman, that’s just not true!” Hannity shot back. “Why do I have to educate a lawmaker on your law that you passed?!?”
