Search for Executive Director The Executive Director of the African Leadership Institute is a unique opportunity for a dynamic leader to take an already successful Institute to the next level of growth and impact upon leadership in Africa. The opportunity is only bounded by the individual’s vision and capacity to deliver. The African Leadership Institute (AfLI) is nurturing a network of future leaders of Africa. Our goal is to strengthen and nurture the leadership capabilities of Africa’s highest potential emerging leaders and in so doing establish and support an active network of emerging leaders across Africa committed to grasping the responsibility of leadership for the transformation of the continent. AfLI’s flagship programme, the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship programme is in its 8th successful year, and has built a reputation as arguably the best leadership programme designed specifically for high potential African leaders in the 25-40 age range, and it is attracting Africa’s finest young leaders. The young leaders of the Tutu Fellows network are already having a big impact in the 26 African countries they live in, and represent a tremendous asset and powerful catalyst for transformation of the continent. A dynamic leader is sought to scale up the Institute’s activities and build upon its undoubted strengths and massive potential to achieve its goals. The Executive Director will work with the Founders who have established and built the Institute to its current level of success, with a view to taking full executive responsibility within 2 years. Key Responsibilities The primary responsibilities in the first two years will be: 1. Develop a vision for the future growth of the Institute to achieve its demanding goals of achieving major impact upon leadership on the continent, and develop a strategy to drive the Institute in achieving the vision. 2. Secure adequate funding to achieve the vision through lasting meaningful partnerships with donors and initiate the establishment of an endowment. In particular in the short term a. Secure ongoing funding for the Tutu Programme and one annual Regional Programme of $500,000 p.a. by end 2014. b. By the end of 2014, raise sufficient funds to cover your own management and administration costs for at least another two years 3. Build the brand and identity of the Institute and its programmes through innovative promotional activities, new leadership and alumni initiatives and through productive use of modern electronic media. In particular ensure an upgraded, modern interactive website is commissioned with adequate ongoing content management by the middle of 2014. 4. Develop close, productive working relationships with partnership organisations to the mutual benefit of all parties, e.g. funding partners, academic institutions, allied Foundations and Institutes, etc. 5. Develop and manage the processes and activities that will ensure the alumni network is completely interactive within two years and thus able to deliver value to the alumni as well as the broader community 6. Create a plan for a support mechanism for the alumni network to leverage its enormous strengths to catalyse change on the continent by the middle of 2014 7. Take over the Management and Administration of the affairs of the NPO - African Leadership Institute in South Africa, and fulfil all Executive and Board Secretarial functions for the NPO by end 2014 8. Grant administration and delivery of all written and financial reports required by the grant makers. In the longer term: 1. Fully implement the strategy for the future growth of the Institute 2. Establish an endowment and secure adequate on-going funding to fund the strategy 3. Fully support the alumni network 4. Continue to build the brand, reputation and identity of the Institute to be recognised as as a thought leader and centre of expertise on leadership in Africa and of leadership development for emerging leaders 5. Ensure the high quality of the Tutu Fellowship programme and other programmes run by the Institute is maintained, particularly in the breadth and quality of the Fellows who are selected for the programmes. 6. Expand the Institute’s programme portfolio to cover more than just the annual class of Tutu Fellows and one Regional Programme Desired Attributes The candidate will already have demonstrated strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to deliver results. He/she will have many of the following attributes: • Dynamic, energetic and optimistic – a self-starter who can make things happen • Passionate about Africa and the Institute’s objectives and will relish the opportunity to influence the future development of Africa through the Institute • Unquestionable integrity, and driven to achieve a better Africa for the people of the continent, rather than material personal gain. • Able to grow an organisation in an unstructured environment – an entrepreneurial flair • A breadth of understanding of Africa and a good network of high level relationships across the continent • A strong relationship builder and networker • A person who relishes the challenge of ‘selling’ an exciting vision to a wide variety of constituents across the continent and globally. • An excellent communicator, who is confident in interactions with the highest level of leadership in government, business and civil society • A track record of success in raising funds and maintaining excellent relationships with donors • A visionary, imaginative strategic thinker – who can also convert the vision into an actionable plan and deliver on that plan • A track record of delivering results, not just ideas • An ability to succeed without support staff, and thus able to manage and influence people over whom they have no direct control • A knowledge of how to effectively use new developments in electronic media to market the Institute and support its activities and its alumni • Not afraid to roll up one’s sleeves to do all the necessary administrative work to ensure the efficient running of the Institute • Ability to manage resources and programmes efficiently and effectively within budget constraints, and deliver results.
