Seats are filling fast for our short getaway to Aussie Sights Coach Tours Batemans Bay & The South Coast Monday 27 October – Friday 31 October 2014 Batemans Bay, on the South Coast of New South Wales is located on what is known as the Eurobodalla Coast. Most of the population in this area is concentrated along the coastal fringe with the main population areas being Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma. The coast is very scenic and enjoys a temperate climate. Mainly due to the influence of Canberra there is currently a great deal of development, including large numbers of holiday homes, in the immediate environs of Batemans Bay, through places like Mossy Point and Batehaven. During our stay we will tour through these areas as well as to some delightful smaller centres such as the National Trust listed Central Tilba. DAY 1: SYDNEY/BATEMANS BAY (Mon 27 October, 2014) Welcome to our 5 day tour based in lovely Batemans Bay. We head out to the Southern Highlands this morning - an area known for beautiful gardens and English style countryside. We make a brief detour to see the Fitzroy Falls which are easily accessible from the car park. After a short detour through the classic little village of Burrawang, we reach the exciting Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk. There is some walking involved but the views over the treetops and down the Illawarra coastline are magnificent. We continue along the Princes Highway to Batemans Bay. The Araluen Motor Lodge is actually located in Batehaven, a nearby village on the southern shore of Batemans Bay, with Snapper Island lying off the coast. It’s an idyllic place to spend our next four nights! DAY 2: BATEMANS BAY (Tuesday 28 October, 2014) This morning we embark on a sight-seeing tour of the Batemans Bay area including a visit to the Information Centre. There will be some free time to buy a coffee and explore the shops and the wharf area before we join the “MV Merinda” for an upstream, scenic cruise along the magnificent Clyde River to the town of Nelligen. This little town is a real retreat - a peaceful little village on the edge of the river. The soothing tranquillity of the river is matched by the silence of the surrounding forest. Nelligen’s once bustling streets are now quiet and serene. Its a special experience. We then re-board the vessel and return to Batemans Bay, motoring under the only single span lift bridge still operating in NSW. Our last visit today is to a local oyster farm with a chance to sample a few of these local delicacies. DAY 3: SOUTH COAST (Wednesday 29 October, 2014) This morning we travel south to Moruya – a word derived from the aboriginal word meaning “home of the black swan”. These majestic birds still visit during the breeding season, gliding peacefully among the pelicans and diving cormorants, while sea eagles circle overhead. First settled in 1827, the area soon gained a reputation for its agricultural products which were initially shipped to Sydney. The discovery of gold in 1841 assured the town’s prosperity and it was officially proclaimed a town in 1855. Moruya earned a reputation for it’s high quality granite. In 1924, the British Engineering firm contracted to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge began taking the granite required for the pylons from a quarry on the north side of the river. From Moruya we continue to Narooma, which is built on land almost completely surrounded by the waters of Wagonga River, its estuary and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. We take in the local sights including a visit to the Naroomas Visitor Centre, which houses a museum of the history of nearby Montague Island. A scaled replica of Montagues historic lighthouse is at one end and it houses the fascinating light mechanism brought from the island. Lunch today is at the Narooma Golf Club – surely one of the best settings of any Club in Australia! This afternoon we call at South Coast Cheeses at Central Tilba and then continue to nearby Bermagui. After taking a look at the town we spend some time at Fisherman’s Wharf located on the Harbour. There is a great selection of cafes and shops including specialty shops and an art gallery - all with fantastic ocean and bay views as the background. We head back to Batemans Bay via Cobargo and the Pacific Highway. Day 4: MOGO ZOO & OLD MOGO TOWN (Thu 30 Oct, 2014) Today we travel via a string of villages along the southern shore of Batemans Bay, through Malua Bay to Mogo where we visit the Mogo Zoo. This is home to lions, tigers, jaguars, snow leopards, a variety of monkeys, red pandas and some small clawed otters – just to mention a few. After lunchand some free time to look through the art and craft shops in Mogo we head off to visit the Old Mogo Town Mining Village. We have arranged a guided tour of this meticulously recreated mining town, take a walk through Ron’s Gold Mine and watch Betsy the steam engine work at the crusher plant. After our day in Mogo we return to Batemans Bay for our final night on tour. DAY 5: BATEMANS BAY/HOME (FRI 31 OCTOBER, 2014) We farewell Batemans Bay and our hosts this morning and travel away from the coast on the Kings Highway. Following our ascent up the mountain, we drive through Braidwood to the town of Lake Bathurst. Our visit includes a tour of the Woodlawn Bioreactor. The Woodlawn Bioreactor of Veolia Environmental Services enables the efficient production of green energy and heat from what would otherwise be waste material, increasing both resource recovery and disposal whilst reducing waste volumes. Woodlawn is a former open-cut copper and zinc mine site. The mine chasm receives around 100,000 tonnes of Sydney household waste per year and the Woodlawn Bioreactor processes the waste to produce biogas, which is then used to generate renewable electricity. This really is a fascinating stop where we have the whole operation explained, including a visit to a viewing platform at the top of the pit. Our guide points out other local historical points of interest, in particular, the World War II Fuel Stores at Lake Bathurst and their relevance to Australias defence at a time when Japanese naval and air attacks were threatening our security. In the English-like village of Lake Bathurst we enjoy lunch in the pleasant surrounds of the Lavender Garden Tea Rooms. Later this afternoon, we express home, arriving back in Sydney to complete our holiday!
