Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK ARABIC/PORTUGUESE/RUSSIAN TEACHERS Grades K- 16 Dates: June 22 - July 5, 2014 Location: Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minnesota Description: The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and principles of second language and immersion pedagogy serve as the framework for this four-credit graduate-level course: “Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK Arabic, Portuguese and Russian Teachers”. A 14-day residential program designed for a total of 16 K-16 teachers of three languages (six each in Arabic and Russian, and four in Portuguese), the participants enhance their understanding of best practices in teaching language through classroom-based discussion and active participation in language-learning groups and activities at Concordia Language Villages. Class discussions focus on immersion methodology and current research on second language acquisition. Through assigned readings and presentations, participants increase their understanding of current theoretical bases for second language acquisition, instruction, and assessment. The immersion model of instruction observed at the Villages is compared to second language instructional principles and helps participants define their personal instructional philosophy. Participants create lesson and unit plans that reflect experiences at the Villages and are based on the World-Readiness Standards. The major instructional themes include: a) the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and how they are reflected in curriculum, instruction and assessment in the language classroom; b) comparison of immersion and second language methodologies with special emphasis on content-based instruction; c) integration of culture in lesson and unit planning; d) differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners; e) Standards-based performance assessment. Participants reside at Bemidji State University and make daily trips to Concordia Language Villages. Program costs: $1880 Tuition for the four-credit graduate course ($470/graduate credit) $975 Housing and all meals during the STARTALK program Full scholarships in the amount of $2855 are available to participants through the STARTALK program. In addition, each participant will receive up to $400 to defray the costs of travel to Bemidji, Minnesota. STARTALK scholarships are available to applicants who are selected to participate in the program. Selection is based on response to the question about motivation for applying to the STARTALK program, and current/future teaching situation.
