Second childhood Age has wearied you Life certainly took its toll You wish you were young again But now you have grown old But take away the layers and peel back time We were young and you were mine Now you sit in a care home and close your eyes The nurses care for you - they don’t see you cry You want your youth back And the energy you had The crimplene clothes in your wardrobe don’t even match! Are they aware you were a wild young thing? Without a care – Up for anything! He’s long gone and you outlived him Friends come and chatter awhile Your son visits and makes you smile If only they all knew You want to shed those support stockings And be plain rude But acceptable behaviour does not include Reciting your conquests of the ones you pursued Old age is what we hopefully meet But a youngster inside is who they’ll greet A person who’s locked in the past Memories for company Now a face forlorn In old age like a child again we are reborn Second childhood awaits Dementia often too But behind it all Is still the real you No one cares who you are Or, who you’ve been The youngsters now Care for you reluctantly as if tied with string Freedom gone, them dependent on A system which doesn’t care If you live long or about your life’s song
