Secrets of Chess History: Why do we generally accept that Official - TopicsExpress

Secrets of Chess History: Why do we generally accept that Official World Chess Champions start with Wilhelm Steinitz? Because at the time they declared it as such even though the rules and conditions were no different that those before them and chess historians Murray H.J.R. in his book A history of chess (1913) and Winter, Edward G in his book World chess champions said so. The list of unofficial world champions is rather longer and contains chess legends like Paul Morphy, Adolf Anderssen, Howard Staunton. So why dont we recognise these pre-FIDE Unofficial World Champion players who played and beat all the leading players in their time and only recognise the Official pre-FIDE World Champions Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine and Euwe? If you know please share. :)
