Security Tip of the Week: Today’s technological world has many exciting possibilities. As with most great things, there is a down side to having these great advancements. While having great tools like online banking, mobile banking, debit and credit cards are great conveniences for us; they also provide gateways for fraudsters to our financial lives. While keeping our information in those gateways locked and safe can almost seem scary, much of keeping our information safe comes from little things. When you create a password for online sites, consider making a strong password using devices like “haystacking.” While there are many ways to help make a password “strong,” this option allows you to take a relatively simple password to remember and “hide” it amongst special characters in front and back of your password. You can also make a password strong by using combinations of special characters along with capital and lower case alphanumeric characters. Once you have a strong password, do your best to keep it safe and out of the reach of others you don’t want to have this information. Keeping “Password for Online Banking – 222Momma!” on a piece of paper next to your computer is almost like leaving a note on the front door to your house or apartment saying “I’ll be back in 30 minutes, the front door is open.” It’s just not safe. For your debit / credit card, try to keep your pin number hidden. While many know that it is not safe to keep your PIN written down in the same location as your card, many cases are still reported where this still happens. If you are going to write down your PIN, keep it safe and stored AWAY from your card. Some experts even recommend changing PINs and passwords regularly. This can also help keep fraudsters at bay. Many times the way fraudsters gain access to those gateways of our information is when we forget to look at the little things. This isn’t to say that bad things can’t still happen, however one of the best ways to keep your information safe is to remember the small things. Do you have a question or something that you would like to see as a security tip? Just send us a request by sending a message or post.
