Security has been beefed up in Kashmir Valley following the spurt in infiltration attempts in North Kashmir forests and rise in militant activities from past few days. Official sources said that forces have increased checking at different entry points to Srinagar City following the rise in infiltration attempts near LoC in Keran, Tangdar and Machil sectors of Kupwara district. “Probably some militants managed to sneak into this side and it is said that 2-3 militants made their way to Srinagar city,” official sources said. Witnesses said police and paramilitary CRPF men frisked vehicles, particularly LMVs, in most parts of Srinagar following the reports that militants have entered city and some unknown persons have stolen a motorbike from Srinagar city last evening. “They were also checking the documents of motorbikes,” witnesses said. Witnesses said forces had erected barricades at vital junctions and the vehicles entering into Srinagar through different entrance points were also being thoroughly checked. “The additional deployment of forces and police was made at several places,” they said. A police spokesman said that a motorcycle has been stolen from Bulbul Bagh, Srinagar. The beefing of security has come just a day after militants attacked a police station and an army camp in Kathua and Samba in Jammu. The Jammu attacks took place ahead of the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Shareef in New York.
